“In these works we will encounter a study of the two most opposing properties of any art work, discipline and freedom. To try and let these two contradicting elements coexist side by side seamed to me an interesting undertaking.” -Jiri about Falling Angels
Born in France, Karine Guizzo studied dance at the Rosella Hightower Dance School in Cannes. At the present time, she lives in The Hague. From 1987 to 2002 she worked at Nederlands Dans Theater 1 under Jiří Kylián and also with the guest choreographers Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, William Forsythe and Hans van Manen. In 2000, Kylián invited her to create in The Hague the project Underground Scenes for the Nederlands Dans Theater, which she subsequently presented in Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Baden-Baden, Paris, Edinburgh, at the State Opera in Prague and at the Saitama Art Theatre in Japan. Later on, she also re-created some performances following the same concept as „overture“ for the Kylián evening at the Royal Danish Ballet, the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, and the Bayerisches Staatsballet in Munich. She has participated in numerous workshops with Ko Morobushi, Min Tanaka, Carolyn Carlson, Lloyd Newson and dance projects with Yuval Pick. As a choreographer, she collaborated with a number of companies, theatres and festivals (Holland Dance Festival, Cadance Festival, Donlon Dance Company, Codarts). Karine has co-founded the Danslab research centre in The Hague (2005) and has created independent subsidised projects (e.g.Pinocchio, 2011) within the activities of the Cie Melchior Foundation. She regularly holds dance workshops. For the Janáček Brno 2010 Festival, she created an installation in the foyer of the Janáček Theatre. She has also designed costumes and sets for special projects and created “objects” as part of the theatre world which she strives to cultivate. She works with composers, musicians and singers, from alternative to classical music.
